9 ABOUT FORESTRY ACADEMY OF SCIENCES OF UKRAINE At the present stage of societal development, forests as well as the environment as a whole, need protection. In terms of the magnitude of the impact on nature, human activity is close now to the force of geological factors. The processes of negative transformation of environment, including and forest ecosystems have become dangerous and reach critical levels. To inform the society on the possible negative consequences of unsustainable exploitation of forest resources, the need for its sustainable and multipurpose management, to intensify the process of afforestation and reforestation, to promote the idea of forest conservation and restoration, to explain the modern international and national forest policies the advanced part of the representatives of Ukrainian forestry have been united in a public organization – the Forestry Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (FAS of Ukraine). At present the Forestry Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is a scienti fi c, analytical and coordinating public center in the fi eld of forestry, forest protection, forest exploitation, wood processing technologies and forerst economics. The Academy carries out its activities on the principles of democratic self-governanace, collegiality of leadership, publicity and creative activity of all its members. The activity of the Academy extends throughout the territory of Ukraine. Place of location of the central bodies of the Academy – Lviv (Gen. Chuprynky Str, 103, Ukrainian National Forestry University, 79057). The main purpose of the activity of the FAS of Ukraine is to combine the creative efforts of scientists and practitioners of the forest sector to enhance the prestige of the forestry and forest industry, to establish close cooperation between forestry practice and science, support for advanced scienti fi c and practical developments and achievements of science and practice, environmen-tal protection, the restoration and enhancement of the national forests. The main tasks of the Forestry Academy of Sciences of Ukraine are to promote fundamental research on the problems of the theory of forestry, silvi-culture and agroforestry, forest management and forestry economics; forest management planning on the principles of close to nature forestry; assistance in the development and implementation of the programs for improving the envi-ronmental situation, biodiversity protection through the formation of natural reserves an national parks; solving problems in the fi eld of reforestation and forest harvesting, fi nding effective ways to increase the forest cover of the state; scienti fi c, ecological and social substantiation of the need to have forests in a public ownership; development of the concept of transition to sustainable forest management planning in plantation forestry, «energy» plantations; promotion of introducing new advanced methods and technologies in forestry and new forestry research methods. The ForestryAcademy of Sciences of Ukraine is based on the best scienti fi c and practical potential of forestry in Ukraine. Currently, the structure of the Forestry Academy of Sciences of Ukraine consists of 63 academicians, 93 correspondent members, 24 honorary members, 9 foreign members and 9 institutional members.
