Annual Report. PATRIARCHAL CURIA UGCC 2019
39 The Commission also continued the work on the Safeguarding policies at Catholic schools . Com- mission’s experts Fr. Dmytro Kudin and Mrs. Oksana Senchuk participated in a working meeting "Basic guidelines of treating cases on sexual abuse of minors by clergy" on May 17, 2019 at St. Thomas Aquinas Institute in Kyiv. The subject of safeguarding was also discussed with the directors of the Catholic edu- cational institutions during the seminar on Feb 22-24, 2019 and on Aug 26, 2019 based on the exchange visit to US (mentioned above) on the creation of safe environment and relations, and after the partici- pation of the head of the Commission in the conference "Education and prevention — power as service" in Zagreb, Croatia, organized by the Centre for Child Protection of the Pontifical Gregorian University (Sep 19-22, 2019). Within the creation of a marketing plan for a Catholic Educational Institution, the Commission together with the marketing consultant Mr. Dmytro Yaky- mets, has defined two key competitive advantages of a Catholic educa- tional institution: comprehensive and harmonious development of a child; formation of teachers as agents of positive changes in schools and in society. The Commission has been working on the promotion of the idea of Catholic education through a number of events for teachers and directors of public and private schools — round table for teachers of moral and spiritual subjects (Kyiv, Jan. 21, 2019), conference "Theory and practice of the international pedagogic network Pilgrim" (Lviv, Apr 06, 2019), seminar for teachers and parents "Basics of harmonious education" (Chernihiv, May 07, 2019), pilgrimages of teachers (Zarvanyt - sia, Ternopil Oblast, May 11, 2019 and Sep 28, 2019). To promote spiritual formation and personal growth of teachers in public schools, the UGCC Commis- sion on Education has introduced a comprehensive training and formation program for teachers . It was based on the compound program, developed by the Commission "The basic principles of the spiritu- ality of pedagogues: practice of faith for every day as an implementation of the vocation". To present this program to the target audience and to start implementation of the program at the local level, the Commission has conducted the following events: 2 capacity building seminars for prospective trainers from the eparchial/exarchial Commissions to help them implement new methodology with teachers in their regions; 42 local formational trainings "The basic principles of the spirituality of a teacher" in 8 eparchies of the UGCC in Ukraine (1140 teachers participated); 12 trainings for pedagogues of Catholic educational institutions. The Commission laid the basis for permanent spiritual formation of teachers, presenting them the models for joint development of educational strategies and approaches. The UGCC Commission on Catholic Education hopes that in the long-term perspective our work will contribute to reforming the educational sphere in Ukraine through a value-based approach to the formation of teachers and the creation of space for interaction between educational sector and the Church
