50 Soc ial ser v i ces for people in need Social ministry for people in need Pastoral Healthcare Commission Military Cahplaincy Department Penitentiary Chaplaincy Office Department of social services Social ministry in the Church is based on and flows from faith, and expresses the diaconal nature of the Church, being part of the three-fold mission of the Church: to proclaim the Good News (Kerygma), to sanctify (Liturgical life) and to serve (Diakonia). The strategy of social ministry of the UGCC has the following priority goals: promotion of a spirit of sacrifice and social responsibility; service for the benefit of people in need; institutional development and professionalization of social service in the UGCC. The Patriarchal Curia of the UGCC carries out its social ministry through the work of the Department of social services, Military chaplaincy Department, Penitentiary chaplaincy office and Pastoral healthcare commission. The Patriarchal Curia is a co-founder of "Caritas Ukraine", which has expanded its network to 38 branches, with the most growth seen in Eastern Ukraine. Serve one another humbly in love Gal. 5:13 Department of social services The Department of social services of the Patriarchal Curia of the UGCC headed by Bishop Vasyl Tuchapets is a consultative and coordinating body that assists the Head of the Church and the Synod of Bishops in coordinating Church’s social ministry efforts, setting new directions and providing an expert environment. The Department staff has been a voice of the Church in the interconfessional and state social initiatives, promoting a good standing of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church in society. The Department has been a frontrunner of enhancing social ser- vices on the parish level by coordinating a wide project "Studio of Vibrant Parish" and ministry to the deaf. The Department staff organized an All-Ukrainian congress of social ministry of the UGCC on September 2, 2019 attended by eparchial Caritas employees and those involved in social ministry in the UGCC. The main topic of this year’s congress was the engagement of families in parish social ministry, family tutoring and family volunteering. Special emphasis was put on the work of successful Caritas family support centers.
