Орест Голубець • Українське мистецво XX століття
189 короткий словник термінів ments of artists-nonconformists and the return of pieces of art to Ukraine made by artists-emigrants. Controversial questions of the second half of 1980s – the begin- ning of 1990s boil down to two main conditions – paradoxical return of avant- garde tendencies of the first third of the XXth century to the artistic environment of Ukraine and dynamic expansion of postmodernism. At the turn of 1990s Ukrainian industrial society rapidlymetamorphosed into the postindustrial, information-oriented one. Philosophy of postmodernism enters the art world; Ukrainian artists discover new artistic forms. However, to enter the postmodern space without a proper preparation was a difficult task. An important factor was not taken into consideration: Ukrainian society was not ready for graphic language of postmodernism. Artistic practice of the end of the XXth century testifies to its inability to become the integral part of Ukrainian fine art. To stabilize current specific features and reveal prospects for Ukrainian art further development one must once and for all recognize the significance of art ex- perience of the XXth century in its entirety and inconsistency. Undisguised anachro- nisms, that had to be enrured in the XXth century, define peculiarities of our stand- ing in modern art world. Today we do not need to catch up with something we lost or hastily finish the development of modernism or go through all stages of post- modernism. We do not have to take to America “American art” bearing Ukrainian characteristics or to prove that “we are equal” at the biggest European art forums. The real interest can be evoked only by something that makes us different from oth- ers. If the way to modern artist’s success goes from his unsurpassed way of thinking, mentality and genetic code, then in exactly the same way international success of modern Ukrainian art depends on close bond with unrivalled local mentality. It can be confirmed by creative work of leading Ukrainian artists.
